Lead By Example

Through a series of video 40 interviews and curated content, we aimed to show the mission of the program - to expand and inspire new perspectives and the fellows’ unique stories of the cohort as thought leaders, and ambassadors of the Media Lab.

 
 
 

Giorgia Lupi is the co-founder and design director of Accurat, a data-driven design firm with offices in Milan and New York. Her work is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, where in 2017 she was commissioned to create an original site-specific piece.

 
 
 
 

Christine Sun Kim uses the medium of sound through technology and conceptual art to create a direct connection to society at large. She rationalizes and reframes her relationship with sound and spoken languages by using the audience's voice as her own, conducting a group of people to sing with facial movements (rather than sound), and composing visual scores with sign language and musical symbols.

 
 
 
 

Harper Reed is a technologist who predicts the future for a living. He spends most of his life building big things, hacking things, and talking about doing both of those things. As CTO of the Obama 2012 campaign, Harper believes the talent of a great bunch of humans can transform an organization like nothing else.

 
 
 
 

Amanda Nguyen is the CEO and founder of Rise, a non-governmental civil rights organization. After navigating the broken criminal justice system following her own rape, she worked with legislators to draft the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Bill of Rights, which passed unanimously through Congress.

 
 
 
 

Meet MIT Media Lab Directors Fellow Leland Melvin's. Leland's first NASA job was as an engineer at Langley Research Center, where he focused on nondestructive testing, creating optical fiber sensors for measuring damage in aerospace vehicles. He joined NASA's astronaut training program in 1998 but an underwater training incident made him deaf, disqualifying him from space flight.

 
 
 
 

Isha Datar has been a pioneer in the emerging field of cellular agriculture investigating the technical challenges and opportunities in producing cultured meat. Datar published “Possibilities for an in-vitro meat production system” in the journal, Innovative Food Science and Emerging Technologies. Datar has used a medical research model to accelerate cellular agriculture, by funding early stage, foundational research in academia to enable ready-to-market technologies to be developed for commercial use.

 
 
 
 

Adam J. Foss is an advocate for criminal justice reform, emphasizing the role of the prosecutor in ending mass incarceration. Foss believes that the profession of prosecution is ripe for reinvention based on improved incentives and more measurable metrics for success beyond “cases won.” This motivated him to co-found Prosecutor Impact, a nonprofit that develops training and curricula to help prosecutors reframe their role in the criminal justice system.
