Altin received a double-major BFA in painting and animation from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston in 2014. As a maximalist artist, they use many forms of art to invite us into their universe. Starting their artistic journey as a painter, Altin’s practice has expanded to include animation, illustration, photography, film directing, and art direction to express their artistic vision. Following their studies abroad, Altin returned to Istanbul where they encountered the discreet drag scene. Influenced by the underground culture, they create and perform invented personas, characterized through costumes, make-up, and attitude. Her work explores the expression of heritage, tradition, culture, identity, and the often tense but beautiful space between what is said, what is felt, and what is lost in translation. She captures these emotions through her bold use of color, textiles, adornment, and pop culture, linking the past with the present. As the daughter of Lebanese parents who fled the country's civil war in 1982, Feda is guided by her family's American journey and her own childhood growing up as a Muslim in the US. She believes telling personal narratives broadens our perspectives and ultimately helps us feel universal emotions that connect us all. Feda studied sociology at Regis College and photography at the New England School of Photography. She is the creative director of the production operation La Gringa Loca Productions, based in Boston and the Dominican Republic. She has worked in several film productions in the Dominican Republic, and won an Iris Dominicana Movie Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Lolita in the 2017 film "Un 4to De Josue.". She is the writer/producer/creator of the comedic web series, "The Pineapple Diaries," which was featured in Latina Magazine's "5 Web Series Every Latinx Needs to Watch Right Now." In 2019, Paloma was featured in Boston Magazine's "Boston's New Creative Guard," and was selected as one of the WBUR The Artery 25, a series highlighting 25 millennials of color making an impact in the Boston arts scene. Paloma has collaborated with the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum as a Salon Luminary, and is currently editing and launching the third season of "The Pineapple Diaries." She is the recipient of the 2016 Creative City Grant, 2018 City of Boston Opportunity Grant, is a 2019 City of Boston Artist Fellow, and is an Artist in Residency at The Urbano Project (Spring 2020). As a DJ, producer, event curator, and community partner, Chimel Idiokitas, also known as ReaL P, tells stories through music and social creativity. Born in Houston, TX and raised in Roxbury, MA to parents of Nigerian and Liberian descent, Chimel developed his love for music and community under the wings of his "vinyl junkie" father and his five hip-hop-loving older brothers. He currently serves as the Director of Community Outreach for Boston University’s Medical Campus, where he is tasked with developing key partnerships within the Greater Boston community to bolster the presence of the University. Having been a DJ since the age of fifteen, ReaL P has also established himself as a staple in the New England nightlife, music, and entertainment scenes. He has curated social gatherings, parties, and concerts in some of Boston’s premier venues. Specializing in a multitude of genres, he has built his career around quality, passion, innovation, and organic fun. As a queer, Vietnamese-American activist, Aiden uses art as a platform to unite and uplift his community. He founded Vănguard, an international publication, and the Queer Vietnamese Film Festival, an independent film fest dedicated to celebrating the artistic and cultural contributions of the LGBTQ Vietnamese community within cinema. His work has been featured in exhibitions throughout the world, and was recently archived by the Library of Congress. She is an Individual World Poetry Slam Champion and the artistic director at MassLEAP, a literary youth organization. Olayiwola is currently an MFA Candidate at Emerson College. Sumaiya was a youth worker for the City of Cambridge, working primarily with children of color from immigrant and refugee communities. Currently, she serves as the Director of Community Advocacy and Education at the Massachusetts chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MA). In her role as Director, she works to provide all young people, community members, educators, and youth workers with the tools to self-advocate, implement inclusionary practices, build power, and hone leadership skills. She serves as the youngest board member of the Praxis Project, a national public health organization aimed to empower grassroots organizing in communities of color. She is also the co-author of the first sexual education and reproductive health curriculum that centers Muslim identity and is LGBTQ+ inclusive, which is set to be published with Advocates for Youth in February 2021. This curriculum was written with the Reconcavo Collective, a grassroots collective of Muslim womxn and femmes that Sumaiya co-founded. She holds a bachelor's degree in Political Science with minors in Human Rights and African Studies from the University of Massachusetts in Boston. As a writer, she believes in our ability to teach others and build bridges through storytelling and art. Out of worry, he looks back and loses his wife, Eurydice, this time forever. Afterwards, he was ripped into pieces for refusing to honor Dionysus. I did suffer a lot too, because being an artist means to question everything. Existential crisis is a side effect of being an artist. We adopted an abandoned kitten with my ex-partner Rutkay, and spending so much time with Mimo in our tiny apartment, observing her every move, made us realize how special this creature is. One day, Rutkay was taking a selfie with an effect. Looking into the camera, Mimo saw the flying heart arrows on the phone and looked behind her super fast to see if they were behind her. On many occasions, I recognized her understanding me, finding objects I was looking for and attacking people with bad intentions. So our relationship with Mimo has helped us understand that every being that exists has consciousness and can think. We may not have everyone to love us, but we can surround ourselves with people that love us for who we are and bring out the best in us. Upon my homecoming in 2015, I got to meet with Qubra. Back then, I was young, inexperienced, insecure and confused. I was interviewing them for a zine and I remember asking them; "Do you fear going out? Does it make you feel bad when people say or do homophobic or transphobic things? " And they told me that they absolutely feel no fear, adore any form of attention, and even if it's negative, they take those comments and turn them into energy. Like an Amazon, they are fierce, beautiful, and indestructible. In Turkey, LGBTQ+ people are censored. Our existence is wiped away on films, TV series, news, and books. On February 3rd, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated, "There is no such thing as LGBT." Meanwhile, in heteronormative relationships, where physical and sexual abuse against women is normalized and even glorified in the media, soap operas, and movies in Turkey; violence against LGBTQ+ people rarely make it to the news, and police investigations are frequently postponed. When I researched the symbolism and beliefs based around feathers, I found out that the feather was associated with the heart in ancient Egypt. They believed that after one died, their hearts were weighed against the feathers of Maat (the Goddess of truth, justice, and cosmic order). To us, a feather means more than the lightness of the heart. Feathers belong to birds, and we, as humans, cannot fly at our heart’s will. Lucifer Morningstar was stripped of his wings and banished from heaven to hell. Nymphs have taken a big part in ancient Greek mythology as the symbols of beauty and femininity. Nymphs were associated with nature, mountains, rivers, trees, and plants. So we can say that the idea of beauty comes from nature, but then why are we so drawn to this idea? In her PhD thesis, Olga Chelnokova, from the department of psychology, researched this question. Her research suggests that evolution has made us adept at reading faces. In her research, she has found out that when we look at a beautiful face, the reward system in our brains activates and gives us pleasure. From an evolutionary standpoint, having a pretty face is linked to being healthy and reproductive. But when we look at a face, we are drawn to the eyes as Chelnokova’s research has shown. In anime, the protagonists are mostly drawn with big beautiful eyes, whereas the enemy is often drawn with less attractive faces and small eyes. Similar to the fantasy world of anime, when we are happy with ourselves and others, we tend to see the outer world pretty, whereas when we are feeling insecure or upset, we tend to see the ugly and the mistakes in the outer world. She welcomes her husband, Eros, every night until one day, her siblings inflict doubt in her heart. They make her suspect that her husband is a winged serpent. So, with fear in her heart, she waits one night for her husband to fall asleep and looks at him with a lamp. Seeing the most handsome man she has ever seen in her life, she drips the lamp’s oil onto Eros’ shoulder by accident. He leaves without a word because "Love cannot live where there is no trust." After some time, Eros and Psyche got back together. Now, love and the soul are united as it is the most ideal union of all. I painted Eros without Psyche, because I felt like painting the most beautiful soul in the world is another quest. Aphrodite, struck by his beauty, tried to keep Adonis away from other gods, hid him in a chest, and asked Persephone to watch over him. Curious Persephone opens the chest to see the most beautiful man on earth and falls for him too. She refuses to return him, so Zeus decides that Adonis will spend one third of the year with Aphrodite, one third with Persephone, and one third alone. Adonis, however, desired to spend the latter third of his life with Aphrodite. Tragically, a boar savagely kills him one day as they are out hunting with Aphrodite. So she sprinkled nectar in honor of him on his pooling blood, which gave rise to the blooming anemone. Like the beautiful Adonis, the flower blooms and dies quickly. As cliche as this is going to sound, I am going to say it anyway: physical beauty will last only a few decades, but the beauty of a personality will surpass history. My relationship with him sprouted unexpectedly, and I felt the abundance of love in my heart once again. That is why, to me, he was like the Sun at that time. Despite the fact that love had risen again, it was on its way to set. What made our sun set was the lack of self-love. One cannot be happy unless they truly love themselves and believe in themselves. Without hope and belief in oneself and the future, there is no place for love to blossom. I was thinking of my friend Baran, and I drew the meaning of his name from a broader perspective, and it influenced a very familiar truth about my life. The Moon is bright from looking at her lover, the Sun, but she has a mysterious attraction enough to make one lunatic. The moon, like tides, raises our inner selves onto the surface. Like a medallion, we come with a bright and a dark side. Sometimes, we leak and our dark side attracts the beasts. The young cermaic artists named her brand inspired by her studio which is literally in the boiler room of her apartment. Hermes Plate is one of the first ones I painted over her sculpted ceramic plate. It was challenging yet a very zen experience because, ceramics is art but a chemical process. Unlike painting, you cannot erase or paint over things. Out of 10 pieces, we lost at least 2. A misuse of paint, one celcius hotter oven is enough to break your work apart. The colors always come out darker, muddier.
